Love and Romance in the City:  London Life and Love

A medieval knight with his wife and an attendant

Royal wedding at St Paul's Cathedral in 1981

This walk tells tales of  romance, marriage and illicit love among inhabitants -whether Kings, nobles, radicals or rogues, who peopled the City's streets, houses and palaces from generation to generation.  The pictures on the left shows an English knight in full caparison with his wife; we will visit the ruins of Greyfriars monastery; the heart of Eleanor of Provence (Queen of Henry III and mother of Edward I) was buried here in 1291. That on the left shows Lady Diana Spencer just before she was married to Prince Charles; not the only royal wedding in  St Paul's cathedral that ended badly.  This walk will tell their stories, and those of many other Londoners who live, loved and betrayed in London over the centuries. We will end the walk with a visit to Guildhall Art Gallery to see how love stories have some of the paintings in the its collections.

We start at 11am on Tuesdays and Thursdays, meeting at the City Information Centre in St Paul's Churchyard.  The walk is led by  Susan Gane when advertised here, and a qualified City Guide at other times.  It will last one and half to two hours and end at the monument;  the cost is £7 per person, £6 concessions, with accompanied children under twelve free of charge.
